How To Install a Fia Combination Winter Front and Bug Screen

With every season comes different weather. If you’re in an area that experiences all four seasons, you’re aware of the different effects the climate can have on your car. If you drive a truck, the warm weather can increase the number of bugs and debris that enter your truck’s grill, while the winter season leads to cold weather startups and lack of interior heat. Don’t let the weather dictate your car’s care. Instead, read this article on how to install a Fia combination winter front and bug screen to help you fight off all kinds of weather.

Winter Conditions

Before diving into the details of installing bug and winter front screens, it’s important to get an idea of what kind of damage the weather can actually do. Think about your regular commutes either to school, work, or the store. Are these trips relatively short? When you take your vehicle out in the cold weather for your usual routine drives, you can cause damage to your engine if you didn’t allow enough time for it to regulate its temperature. Aside from the internal risks, the harsh winter weather such as snow and hailstorms can also cause cosmetic damage on the grill.

Bug Damage

Similarly, bugs can also do quite a bit of damage. They are a nuisance at any time of the year but seem to be the busiest during the spring and summer seasons. If you frequently drive your truck on the highway and open roads, you’re likely to have seen the mess they leave on your grill. While this may seem to be more of an inconvenience than an actual problem, it can certainly lead to something bigger.

If bug splats are left too long, they can begin to dry. Once they have dried, they can become permanent marks. Even worse, bug splats are acidic, meaning they can cause damage to your truck’s paint job. If you have a dark truck, the summer heat will thrive on it. Aside from bringing more surface heat to every inch of it, bug splats and other debris on your grill mixed with heat will ultimately bake themselves onto your car. You could end up with a serious mix of marks and imperfections.

Now that you know what kind of problems can arise from bugs and cold weather, you’re ready to learn how to install a Fia combination winter front and bug screen. There are two options for installation. You can use the adhesive or drilling methods. Both processes require using the bug screen as a template.

Option 1 – No Tools Required

For an easy installation, consider using a 3M adhesive such as the Stick-A-Stud™ fasteners included with your screen. If this is your preferred method, follow the steps below for a quick installation.

Before Installing Stick A Stud™:

  • Clean the area you have dedicated for the adhesive. Do this by wiping the area with an isopropyl alcohol swab.
  • Ensure that this area is completely dry and wax-free, with no cleaning fluids present.
  • This area must also be warm to the touch. Placement of the adhesive is recommended when the outside temperatures are over 60 degrees F, if the weather is lower than that, consider using a blow dryer to warm the area up.
  • Bend or shape the base of your Stick-A-Stud™ to fit accordingly.

Installation

  • 1. Snap all the Stick A Stud™ fasteners to your bug screen while simultaneously ensuring their protective backs remain in place.
  • 2. Position the bug screen on your vehicle and be sure to note where each Stick A Stud™ fastener will be located. This will ensure that there is maximum surface contact at each installation point.
  • 3. Temporarily fasten the bug screen by using masking tape to hold it in place.
  • 4. Remove protective backing from a corner Stick A Stud™ fastener. Be sure to avoid touching the adhesive during this step.
  • 5. Apply firm pressure on the fastener for 10 seconds.
  • 6. Apply the next Stick A Stud™ fastener by ensuring that no stress is applied to other fasteners while installing the bug screen.
  • 7. Attach the remaining fasteners along the top and bottom.
  • 8. Carefully remove the bug screen.
  • 9. Apply pressure to the remaining fasteners.
  • 10. Allow a minimum of 24 hours before using it.

Option 2 – Drilling

If you prefer not to use the adhesive, drill on studs are an option as well. This method can be done with the self-tapping screws and studs that are included.

You Will Need:

  • Drill
  • 3/32” drill bit
  • Masking tape
  • Paper for template (Newspaper will do)

Installation

  • 1. Place your bug screen facing down and stretched out tightly.
  • 2. Cut out a template using paper.
  • 3. Mark the centers of all domes ensuring the paper does not slip.
  • 4. Place your template against your truck’s grill after lining up the dome marks tape template into place.
  • 5. Using your 3/32” drill bit, drill through your template where the dome centers are marked.
  • 6. Remove the template.
  • 7. Securely fasten the studs to the grill with screws but be sure not to over fasten.
  • 8. Snap on your bug screen or winter front.
