Leatherette: the Manufacturing Process

Who doesn’t love the look of sleek leather seats in their vehicle? The combination of its soft, smooth texture and luxurious appearance makes it a stylish choice of upholstery in any truck, SUV, or car. What’s less appealing, however, is the work and money you need to put into your seats to keep real leather looking good for years.

When you love the look of leather but hate the work and cost, opting for leatherette seat protectors can save you from many of the hardships of authentic leather without sacrificing the appearance. For an inside look at simulated leather covers, learn about the manufacturing process of leatherette to see what makes this comfortable, easy-to-clean material so incredible.

What’s in Leatherette?

If leatherette isn’t authentic leather, then what is it? Leatherette is a simulated leather product that manufacturers create out of plastics such as polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC is the same material that composes vinyl products. The plastics can match any variety of colors and fit any shape.

During the mixing step, the manufacturer adds color along with any other components that change the resilience of the end product. For LeatherLite™ seat covers, we add full ultraviolet protection along with our signature black, gray, blue, or red colors.

Drying the Leatherette

With the leatherette mixture finished, the next step is pouring and drying or extruding it. The manufacturer pours the liquid onto the polyester backing to allow it to gain its flexible, form-fitting nature. Machinery ensures that the pour is even, and the manufacturer can speed up the drying process by using heat.

Finishing the Leatherette

Once the product is dry and is a soft, leathery texture, the manufacturer sprays the leatherette with a finishing coat, which is another layer of polymer that acts as a protectant against water and scratches. As a plastic, leatherette is already water-resistant, but the extra coating ensures that it keeps its shine and holds its own against spills and rain.
